It is in July however that cowboy culture comes to the fore as the city hosts the annual Calgary Stampede – 10 days of cowboy fun and excitement.
Edmonton is known as the Festival City, with 30 different events throughout the year. Explore the city on a segway or take a thrilling jetboat ride down the beautiful valley of the North Saskatchewan River. Edmonton is the perfect base for travelling up to Northern Alberta and seeing the Northern Lights and no trip is complete without a trip to the West Edmonton Mall, North America’s largest shopping mall.
Wherever you start, pristine wilderness sits right on the edge of the gateway cities. Head to the Canadian Rockies and enjoy the towns of Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise – ideal bases for a host of activities including skiing, boarding, dogsledding, snowshoeing in the winter, and hiking, rafting, horse-riding , even heli-yoga at other times. Take the time to savour the local Rocky Mountain cuisine, or take some rest and relaxation at one of the Natural Hot Springs. Wildlife spotting is also a must – with black and grizzly bears, elk and moose being among the most prized. A trip along the Icefields Parkway, known as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, should also be a must-do.
Take the time to explore the First Nations people in Alberta South – visit places such as Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump or Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park where you can stay in a tepee.
